Who’s Flora

FLORA KUNG

Founded in 1983 in New York, FLORA KUNG is an American women’s designer apparel brand known for its eye-catching color combinations and original prints created by its eponymous designer.

The Beginning

Flora was born in Taipei to an illustrious family from Northern China and had wanted to become a writer or a ballerina. However, this dream was diverted when she came to New York for high school and received kudos for her artwork, and decided to attend Parsons School of Design. Her fashion career got a kick start during a summer in Paris when she freelanced for some of the then-hottest Ready-to-Wear houses. Soon after, Flora joined the iconic Emmanuelle Khanh as her assistant.

Becoming Flora

In the early 80’s, Flora returned to New York and founded her eponymous label. Unable to find fabrics to her liking, she start painting and drawing original prints by hand, then had the artwork reproduced on silk – which became the essence of her collections to come. By 1990, Flora was called the “Princess of Prints” by Bloomingdale’s legendary fashion director Kal Ruttensein while her brand was considered one of the most exciting and the most bankable ones on 7th Avenue. It had five divisions and distributions in four continents, including her own shop in Harvey Nichols in London. Besides Dresses and Sportswear, her Intimate Apparel was in Victoria’s Secrets, her Swimwear appeared on Sports Illustrated, and her Scarves were collected as wearable art. However, Flora couldn’t resist Paris calling. At the height of her career, she handed her duties to her management and design teams, traded Manhattan for a hiatus in Sun Valley, Idaho, then moved back to Paris.

Flash Forward

In Paris, Flora started a family, attended La Sorbonne and dabbled in made-in-France collections, before settling on a New England farm with her husband and their young children so the latter could have a quintessential country childhood. Before long, Flora was drawn back to designing again, this time, with the help of creating original prints from her young children. These limited-edition artsy dresses in luxurious silk jersey were once again embraced by a group of the finest clients in the US and worldwide, notably Kate Middleton, who was photographed strolling out of a London club in a stunning Flora.
